The White House confirmed on April 23 that due to lobbying from senior executives of a number of automotive-related companies, President Trump is considering exempting the “base” tariff on car parts imported from China, which could be lowered to 50-60%. However, it is still waiting for the final decision by President Trump. It should be noted that the 25% tariffs on “imported cars” and “imported car parts”, set to take effect on May 3, are not among the exemptions and will remain in place. Some industry analysts have pointed out that the additional 25% tariffs will increase the manufacturing costs of car manufacturers by at least US$ 100 billion this year.
