Japanese power tool maker Makita has announced that it will acquire the power tool business of fellow Japanese manufacturer Panasonic. Prior to the transaction, Panasonic spun off its power tool operations into a new division called Electric Works Company. Subject to regulatory approval, Panasonic will transfer all shares of this business entity to Makita, thereby transferring full ownership of product development, manufacturing, and sales, including factory and construction fastening systems as well as related IoT‑enabled smart‑factory solutions. The segment reportedly involves about 31,000 employees, although financial and structural details of the deal have not been disclosed.
Since launching Japan’s first cordless power tool in 1979, Panasonic has developed numerous advanced torque‑control and IoT data‑management technologies in its power tools business. The divestiture allows Panasonic to focus on its core electrical equipment and digital technology segments, while Makita aims to leverage Panasonic’s expertise in factory fastening equipment and high‑precision torque control, combined with its own battery and motor systems, to fully enter factory and industrial production markets. Through this integration, Makita plans to create higher‑value, smart fastening and data‑management solutions and strengthen its global presence in construction and industrial markets.
